OS49: Marvin Rockwell – Spreading Peace & Creating Paradise in Costa Rica

Posted on

There are 1410 miles between Fairhope, AL and Monteverde, Costa Rica. We know this because while interviewing this week’s guest, Marvin Rockwell at his home in Monteverde, describing his epic journey there from Alabama in 1948, we pulled it up on Google maps. Of course, the internet wasn’t at the disposal of Marvin and the small community of Quakers heading south from Alabama in 1948 on their way to Costa Rica. Nor were fully completed roads. Marvin and three other men had just completed a year and a day sentence for evading the American draft, recently implemented to staff up the Korean War. Deeply against killing another, the group sought more peaceful pastures, and was drawn to Costa Rica given its warm, welcoming climate and recent decision to ban their military…entirely. In this episode, Marvin shares his remarkable story. He also talks about how Costa Rica has changed over the years, and how it hasn’t (it still has no military and a strong commitment to peace, for example). We learn about how he and others started the Quaker community in Monteverde, how they learned to farm and make a living there, how they tried (and failed) to construct an airstrip, the various adventures he has had since and the one key element that has allowed him to do so many different things over the years following his own, unique path. Marvin Rockwell quite literally blazed his own path in the world and his story will inspire you to do the same. Enjoy!

OS45: Best of 2017 – New Paradigms for Limitless Living

Posted on

2017 was the year we created Ownstream, a new platform to amplify the message that every person can live their highest truth, joy, and excitement. To that end, the Ownstream Podcast features the stories of people doing just this–following their own resonance and using it as direction to pave new and dynamic paradigms for limitless living that are open to everyone. This episode pulls together the best of our 2017 episodes, aiming both to reveal the inner beliefs and experiences of those blazing their own unique paths, and to feature a number of specific topical paradigm shifts covered on the podcast this year. Specifically, this “Best of” episode features: the belief systems and transformational turning points of our guests, and the following new paradigms: tiny/mobile living; health and healing through diet; alternative education; entrepreneurship; redefining work as following your calling or excitement; and the new financial world of cryptocurrency. We also include reflections from our guests on the joy of living in one’s true calling and service to the world. It is tremendous what can change in a year when you refuse anymore to listen to the prescriptions of others, and begin to surround yourself only with the voices and energy of those who resonate, and who will tune you to your own highest frequency. You may find an entirely different you at the end. Or one that has been there all the time, just waiting… yearning.. leaping inside to be expressed. It is possible for everyone to do this, and a gift we intend to give with this Best of 2017 episode. Our hope is that you will find someone and something in this episode that resonates, and that will call you to move further in the direction of your own great truth, joy, and calling. What else is there, really, to do with this life? Enjoy!

OS44: Stephen & Theresa – A Year of Following Our Excitement (+ More)

Posted on

As we pause here at the end of 2017, we look back on the year that was and the amazing events that have transpired for us as we have lived by one simple maxim: follow your excitement. We recently relistened to the first episode of the Ownstream Podcast, recorded nearly one year ago. We were blown away by how much of what we intended for 2017 came true for us. From Theresa quitting her job, to us traveling the west in a converted Dodge Sprinter van to actively building community…it’s all in here. In this episode, we cover our 2017 journey through the theme of “follow your excitement”. We also briefly discuss some recent negative media surrounding Bentinho Massaro. Given our attendance at 3 of his events, our implementation of his powerful teaching and our intimate interaction with his worldwide community, we feel called to share our perspective on this young spiritual teacher. Mostly, our aim with this episode is to inspire you to consider 2018 as the year when your take a bold leap forward into your own excitement. As we discuss, our experience is that the universe has all types of surprises and miracles in store if you do. It only awaits your first empowered step. Are you ready? Enjoy!

OS43: Matt Mitler – Theater, Transformation & The Pursuit Of Truth

Posted on

It is said that the inherent challenges of being an actor will rather naturally weed out those without the true bug in their system. If this is true, Matt Mitler must be completely consumed by it. His ambition though is not for fame nor fortune, as his interest in those conventional notions of success has waned as he and his work have matured. Instead, it is the tantalizing quest for truth, expansion and – perhaps most of all – the urgent need to serve others using his art. Imagine this: a group of actors wholly dedicated to the audience – be it in a theater, church or hospital – rather then the aggrandizement of themselves or the whole. In your picture, be certain that the troupe is imminently skilled, expressive, nimble and daring – all at once. This is Matt Mitler’s utopia of sorts, his beloved group Dzieci Theatre, laden with some of the finest performers in New York City (including Matt himself). Dzieci’s aim is to utilize theater and performance as a means for the personal evolution of the actor and the blooming of the heart in the audience. In this interview, we discuss the evolution of Matt’s art and how seemingly every aspect of his career and the evolution of Dzieci has existed outside of the traditional box. We explore how Matt’s amazing path has been in service to a hidden taste for truth, and that by trusting the calling of sorts, Matt’s journey has brought him all sorts of surprises and connections. We also probe Matt’s remarkable history having studied with directors Jerzy Grotowski & Eugenio Barba, the actor Ryszard Cieslak, humanistic psychologist Carl Rogers and more. Ultimately, this is a story of following one’s unique taste for truth, and when mixed with a little faith, how this simple approach creates something remarkable, rich and imminently meaningful. Enjoy!

OS42: Hemma Haridin – Healing, Confidence & Personal Acceleration

Posted on

Just a few years ago, Hemma Haridin ran multiple accounting franchises in New York City. She was marginally fulfilled, supported her family and loved being her own boss. Upon the passing of her dear grandfather though, some parts of herself began to open up, revealing a vastly different blueprint for living than the one she previously assumed. She began receiving messages – very clear ones – related to a deeper calling or capacity that she had barely tapped. “You’re a healer”, she heard. After hearing this exciting message, she quickly went to google (as you do) to learn more. The first search result was a modality of healing that rang the bell for her -ThetaHealing®. That night, she attended a nearby workshop, cleared some blockages in her psyche and became an immediate believer. In other words, she moved quickly, acting on her excitement with confidence. The results were startling. Two short years later, Hemma has a thriving healing business, helping others to clear their blockages and step into their life paths with full power, and leads powerful trainings enabling others to uncover their healing talents. She also has a unique specialty which is to empower spiritual entrepreneurs to fully own their power and their path. In this episode we discuss her stunning life change, how she became so confident to act quickly and decisively on her excitement and how easy and swift it can be to heal old wounds and traumas. It’s a story of speed, yes, but also one of boldly stepping into one’s true calling in life and the magic that awaits when we do. Enjoy!

OS41: Luigi Gino Di Serio – The Master Fast System

Posted on

At the intersection of science, diet and the human body sits Gino Di Serio — a lifetime student of wellness and healing, and seeker of the keys to optimal health. If there was a diet or fast out there over the past 50 years, Gino tried it. We first learned of his magnum opus — the Master Fast System (MFS) — via Bentinho Massaro. When Bentinho mentioned that he had done a short version of the MFS during a recent retreat, we got interested. We eat a fairly healthy plant-based diet, but it wasn’t always that way, and we have long been interested in fasting and cleansing as a means to thoroughly detoxify the body and maximize health. Upon finishing his lengthy and detailed “protocol” for an MFS we realized we were on the precipice of reexamining yet another mainstream paradigm — one that we have always taken for granted. Namely: Our body’s dependence on food and water. That’s right, Gino believes that we’ve drastically overblown our intake needs, and instead believes that the human body is built to live largely on “plasma” coming largely from the field of energy around and within us. In this amazing conversation, Gino reveals how he pieced the MFS together, what his diet mainly consists of today, and what our diet ought to be based on nature’s perfection and what will leave our system as clear and clean as possible. If health and nutrition interest you, you are sure to find this conversation interesting – possibly even very triggering. We encourage you to listen to this in its entirety and to also check out Gino’s website (linked in the show notes) before forming a judgement. What Gino proposes might seem extreme, but if you look around you at the state of our collective’s health, something extreme might be the only path to survival. Enjoy!

OS37: Stephen & Theresa – Van Life with Baby, Repatterning, Bentinho & More

Posted on

So, what is it like living in a van for 3 months? Where did we go and what did we learn? Where are we off to next. And, how did our 1-year old daughter handle the #vanlife lifestyle? (amazingly well, but there’s more) We’re back in San Diego for a few weeks and are excited to share what we have learned thus far and hopefully inspire you to take a bold leap out of the mainstream path and create something uniquely your own. We have found that by following our highest excitement (often with no idea what awaits us down the path) that we are profoundly provided for, are supported in every way, and are called further and further into deeper union with our true “Self”. Indeed, what started as a journey into nature and the wild with the aim to cut all ties to our old lifestyle and inquire more deeply into how we truly wanted to live (a notion we call “repatterning”) evolved into a powerful spiritual adventure bringing us into greater connection with each other and, most importantly, to our selves. Now, after this wonderful time on the road, we are more clear than ever on how to serve, and are being steered towards a breathtaking future that we could not have possibly dreamed of prior to our van life journey. Ultimately, we have found remarkable clarity by leaping into the unknown and trust more than ever before, that the universe truly has our back…and yours too. Enjoy!

OS35: Anurag Gupta – Live Your Calling, Have Enough & Be Awesome

Posted on

Anurag Gupta’s message is simple: discover & devote your life to your “calling”. From here, design an architecture and environment around you to support the further exploration and realization of your aim. This is a rather simple path, but one that could prove to be the most challenging – and possibly the most important one – you ever embark upon. For some (including us) the changes needed can be dramatic – leaving a job, selling your ‘stuff’, dropping friendships, finding your true voice and expressing that. It seems that fulfillment and true joy only when one steps fully into the space of one’s calling and lives FROM that place. Oh, and as Anurag so clearly states in this interview – it’s never about where you’re going (and the pictures and vision which accompany that). No, in fact, in many cases we must drop all attachment to what we want and allow our calling or truth to lead us. It will lead to many surprises perhaps, but ultimately a much better place than what we (and our programming) could design for us. In this conversation, Anurag lays out his vision for how to live a life of joyful fulfillment. It’s simple, but not easy. For us, his message has been one of the most inspiring we’ve ever heard. We hope you feel the same.

OS33: Gina Savage & Mike Perkins – Farming, Food, Service & True Love

Posted on

Mike Perkins and Gina Savage had, independent of the other, always dreamed of owning their own Oregon farm. Gina toiled away at a corporate job while Mike ran various businesses, while periodically traveling and living out of his camper. When they met, and fell in love, both felt buoyed to go for it and act on their excitement. Just three years later, the couple owns a thriving, organic farm in southern Oregon called the “Surf Ranch” where they grow vegetables, raise cattle and build community with other, local farmers. They also just happen to have one of the more amazing Airbnb rentals in the USA, and are praised by virtually everyone who stays with them (including us!). How have they elevated to the level of “super hosts”? What is their secret to inspiring epic, rave reviews? And, what is life truly like for two people who gave it all up for nature and their shared love of growing food? For many, cashing in the chips for the farm lifestyle is a fantasy, perhaps even a dream. For Gina and Mike, it’s a dream come true and they aren’t afraid to admit they are loving every second of it. Enjoy!
